Winners of The 2018/9 Sino x Niio Illumination Art Prizes will have their artwork seen by millions when shown in Hong Kong Harbour, on two of the world's most prominent screens. The 2 competitions offer artists exposure on an unprecedented scale.
The Sino Group has lit up Hong Kong with its Christmas and Chinese New Year illuminations for 35 years. Now, for the first time, in partnership with Niio, it will be displaying a curated selection of moving image art works during the festive periods of Christmas and the Chinese New Year. The works will be chosen from the winning artists of these ground-breaking art prizes and shown on two screens on the facades of Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and the Empire Centre.

Open Call Submission
We invite professional artists and art students from around the world to submit artworks that support creativity at its most diverse for either one or both competitions:
1. Category 1:
Theme: Artistic Blessing.
Sub themes: Festive, Celebration, Growth.
To be screened in December and over Christmas time
2. Category 2:
Theme: New life.
Sub themes: Spring, Blossom, Growth, Rejuvenation.
To be screened in January and February and over Chinese New year time
A jury of five international artworld and design professionals will select the winners.
Technical Specifications And Guidelines
1. There are 2 screens on 2 buildings which will display the artworks
(Screens A and B, as shown below)
2. Submissions for Artworks will be shown on Screen A and B together,
One artwork will be presented on the 2 divided screens.
Artwork Resolution: 1068(px) x 364(px).
Screen B- Empire Centre
Screen A- Tsim Sha Tsui Centre
3. Screens are using LED RGB technology - LED Pitch:
- Line interval: 305mm or 12”
- Dot interval: 203mm or 8” (centre to centre)
4. Each work must be a video / animation, 30 (thirty) seconds to 2 (two) minutes long
Formats: Apple ProRES or Mpeg H.264/H.265 (HEVC), 30 FPS
5. Artworks are to be submitted only through the Niio platform.
6. Applicants can apply for both prize categories and can send up to 2 artworks.
For each competition category; one winner, one first runner-up and three merits will be chosen.
Their winning works will be publicly screened on the Tsim Sha Tsui Centre and the Empire Centre.
First place winners will also receive USD 4,000 plus round-trip travel to Hong Kong (or the equivalent round trip travel to Tokyo for artists based in Hong Kong) and accommodation plus a Niio 4k Art Player.
Second place winners will receive USD 900 plus a Niio 4k Art Player.
Those placed third, fourth and fifth will receive USD 500.
Category 1 prize (Artistic Blessing) will be screened during December.
Category 2 prize (New life) will be screened during January - February.
Registration is now open, and closes on November 15th.
The registration process consists of three simple steps:
